A gift with purchase only works if shoppers want the gift. It only pays if you can afford to give it away. Here is what to check before you pick one.
Shoppers should want it
The best gifts are things your shoppers would happily buy, but have not yet. Good places to look:
- Travel or mini sizes of products you already sell.
- Add-ons that go with the main product: a pouch, a refill, a brush, a scoop.
- Products people are curious about but rarely add to the cart on their own.
Avoid branded merch nobody asked for. A tote bag with your logo is a gift for you, not for the shopper.
The margin has to work
Look at the cost of the gift, not its retail price. Add packing and any extra shipping it causes. That total is what each gift order costs you.
Then set the spend threshold so a qualifying order still earns more than an average order without the gift. If the numbers only work at a threshold most shoppers never reach, pick a cheaper gift.
Gift cost + packing + extra shipping = cost per gift order. Keep this number next to your threshold when you set the offer up.
You need enough stock
A gift offer that runs out halfway through a weekend is worse than no offer. Before you start:
- Check how many units you have and how many orders a week usually reach the threshold.
- Decide what happens when stock runs low: pause the offer, switch the gift, or end it.
- Use a real product for the gift, so stock goes down with every order and your reports stay right.
Weight and size matter
A heavy or bulky gift can push an order into a higher shipping band, or need a bigger box. Weigh it with a typical order. Small, light and hard to break is the safest choice.
Match the gift to the season
A gift can change with the season while the rest of the offer stays the same. A lip balm in winter, a sunscreen mini in summer, a gift box in December. Shoppers notice a gift that fits the moment.
Test it before you launch
- Add the gift as a real product with its own stock.
- Set the threshold and check the cart on a phone and on a desktop.
- Place a test order that qualifies, and one that drops below the threshold.
- Make sure the gift is free only when the cart qualifies, and is never charged by surprise.
Pick a real product and a spend threshold. A checkout guard keeps the gift free only while the cart qualifies.
Gift checklist
- Shoppers would want it, even if they would not buy it today.
- Cost per gift order is clear and the threshold still pays.
- There is enough stock for the length of the offer.
- It does not push orders into a higher shipping band.
- You tested a qualifying and a non-qualifying cart.
